Ava’s POV There were only a few rules I lived by in college. Rule number one? Never fall for a jock. It wasn’t just a personal preference. It was survival; I had to avoid them in order to do well. I had seen too many smart girls throw away their GPA for a 6'0 something guy with biceps, a quarterback playboy and a bad attendance record. Not me, no way, I'll never do that, that's how I survived my first year in Westbridge University, and I'm not going to break that rule in my second year.

She opened it to find a tall, scarred man with a permanent scowl. “Work starts now,” he barked, thrusting a thick book into her hands. She barely caught it, its weight nearly knocking her off balance. The words Rule Book were stamped in bold letters on the cover. “You’ve got one job,” the man growled, his voice low and dangerous. “Follow the rules. And don’t make me regret letting you live.” Wren’s grip tightened on the book as the door slammed shut. She swallowed the bile rising in her throat. This wasn’t survival. This was a game. And if she wanted to win, she’d have to play by their rules… until she could rewrite them.

This was the start of something big and it deserved a celebration. “Before you get to jumping, don't forget your responsibility for this company.” He leaned across the desk and grabbed a magazine sitting beside a pen holder. He handed it to me and the book almost fell off my hand. They were not pages. It was volumes. “Rules and guidelines,” I read the title of the book out loud. “Yes. You're supposed to read through everything. It contains every rule you should know before you work here. If it is noticed that you omit any of the rules, you can be assured I'm kicking you out.”

“This is the contract. The rules are stated there.” I opened the file and glanced through it. “You can take it home and study them; give me feedback tomorrow evening. But I will read out the rules for you now because they start now, and in case your brain can’t comprehend them, then I can explain.” Anger seethed through me, and I almost threw the file back at him, but when I thought about the money involved and how it would benefit little Sophie, I bit my lower lip to push back the anger. He continued.

Chandra pulled Amara away. "Stop." "Don't try to rule me, Chandra!" "Then don't do anything against my rules! Or I will shut you up." The last line she just stated served as a tranquilizer to me- it made me freeze- stopping me to eat Amara. Into the thin air, I shouted, and I growled. The nearby wolves responded, including Amara. But Chandra didn't. One thing is for sure, she isn't part of our race, and this place is not werewolves' realm. Just the parallel of my world.

That's when we made the three rules. Rule One: Always come when the other calls, no matter what. Rule Two: Always tell the truth and never keep secrets. Rule Three: Never fall in love with each other and never confess such. We were eight years old and we thought we were so smart making rules that would keep our friendship safe forever. But the thing is no rule can protect you from the inevitable so I ended up breaking two of them.

Or maybe I need to let all of that frustration out in another way, a much better, satisfying way. Apparently, Liam's obnoxiousness didn't put a stop to the heat already swivelling through me because of the things Sabrina said.

Maya whispered, “We’re screwed.” Professor Richards barked, “Miss Adeniran. One more sound and you’re out.” Maya mimed zipping her lips. I sighed, picked up my pen, and started writing. Ninety minutes. Just ninety minutes. If I survived this, I’d probably pass out in the hallway. The ninety minutes crawled, but I forced myself to focus. Rule 403. Case law. Hearsay exceptions. I wrote like my hand was on fire. For once, even Maya was quiet. Her head bent over the paper, pen moving fast.
