EXCEPTION
Blood spilled, and for the first time, Blaine howled.
“You bitch!”
Satisfaction flickered—then died at the look in his eyes. Darkness, murderous. I scrambled to my feet, every bone screaming, and bolted.
I didn’t know where. A month in this neighborhood, and Blaine had never let me out alone. My thoughts blurred. All I knew—I had to escape. His roars chased me, closer and closer.
At the street’s end, a mansion loomed. Stone walls. Chandeliers blazing. Sanctuary or trap—I didn’t care. I ran, crouched under an oak, lungs burning. But his voice drew nearer.
