I looked at her before faking a smile, “I ran away from my husband, that is the only statement I can tell,” “He found me, so here I am,” I added before drinking my tall glass of water. I didn’t come mentally prepared for this. “Then why did you run away? You almost endangered the business ties with our family,” Mother complained. “So that is all you care about? Sebastian losing me and you guys are losing your business?” I almost scoffed, “I don’t know why I am not surprised,” I almost flinched when someone held my hand under the table. I looked at Sebastian and he was giving me this reassuring look that I needed.

She asked, confused, and for a moment felt offended that the mate she desperately prayed to the moon goddess to send his way was being kept away from her. “She ran away.” His words hung in the air as Esme diluted this new piece of information. Mouth hanging in the air, she blinked furiously, trying to put the pieces together. “What do you mean she ran away? Did she not feel the mate bond?” “I'm certain she did, which is exactly why she ran away.” Speaking about it to someone pulled a tug on his chest. A part of his ego struggled to accept that his mate did not want him. His wolf was suffering more, and he could barely sense any other emotion but pure rage and anger.

I thought I was prepared to catch her but I had underestimated my mate. “Isn’t she impressive?” A smile stretched my lips as I thought of her meticulously planning, putting things together to escape me. The same person she swore she could never live without. “Who?” Matthew looked around the room. “My mate,” I responded to his confusion. “All the warriors, all the trackers, all the officers I have looking for her, she evaded them all. Despite shutting down the pack, she still found a way out. Like a rat.”

My courage to speak to him about the mate thing had evaporated in the thin air already. I bowed my head before I turned back and walked quickly inside my room. He went for a run to clear his head, and now he must have realized it already that I am not worthy enough to be his mate, and that I am just a nuisance he bought from the auction. I do not know how the moon goddess does it, but do mates always work? Isn’t that too good to be true? Destined for each other and love each other for the rest of their lives? It sounds magical and perfect. And that makes it sound to be impossible as well. Mates… it does not always mean a happy life and a happy ending isn’t it?
