I had never seen eyes that shade before I met him. For some reason, they remind me of the moon. Especially when he stood in different lights. The first is called the umbra and it gets smaller as it goes away from the sun. The second shadow is called the penumbra and it gets larger as it goes away from the sun. They are just dark shapes standing on the grey sand. I take one step to the left. The shadows move with me. Thirty dark shapes shift at the exact same second. "Get away," I whisper. The shadows do not answer. They glide closer. I look at the silver water. Shadows do not like reflections. They do not like the light on the waves. If I touch the water, they will leave. I run toward the surf. My feet hit the wet sand. I plunge my right foot into the cold tide. The shadows vanish instantly. The beach behind me is completely empty.
