Darius' POV The corridor outside Kiara’s room was dim and too quiet. It was silly, but a part of me told me that was a sign that I shouldn't be anywhere near here. But the other side of me, the more stubborn part, told me the silence was something I had to endure if I really wanted to do it. The silence that hovered around wasn't helping. It was the kind of silence that pressed against your chest, lilee its main aim had been to wipe me out of the face of this earth entirely.

Thud. Thud. Thud. "What the hell is that?" Sam asked as something hit the wall in a continuous motion. It was coming from the room next to ours. CHAPTER 96 SELINA POV 11:04 pm. I sat on my bed, measuring the silences between footsteps in the corridor as I committed the route to memory. North end. Service corridor. Third door on the right. Camera blind spot. Northwest corner. After eleven. I pressed my hand flat against my stomach. "We're going to try again. Just stay with me." I stood up. The corridor was exactly as quiet as I needed it to be. I moved out of the room and closed the door quietly. The overhead ventilation system created a constant low hum that masked small noises, using it as a cover, I moved.

The basement was cold, damp, and oppressive. Stephen brought me only one meal a day. At first, I was utterly terrified, so frightened that I forced my eyes open wide in the darkness, straining to see anything. When a rat scurried by, my heart pounded uncontrollably. As a mute, however, no matter how terrified I was, I couldn't make a sound. All I could do was curl up against the wall, clutching myself tightly and trembling as fear consumed me.

However, tonight's outcome is an irony to the venue I've picked. I anticipate her reaction as the silence lingers after I drop the bombshell. Her expression falls slowly, her mouth thinning into a flat line, following my announcement. I watch her with alertness as she twirls her fork and knife expertly on either side of her plate. She assesses me with a grave look that makes me contemplate bolting. Fear the silent ones, they say. For they are the most brutal. The silence stretches on, and the tension is starting to grate on my nerves. I wait out her reaction nonetheless, bracing myself for which act she will unleash – the silent killer or the crazy bawler.
