There was a pause. “Well, he’s not here anymore. I am,” Julian growled, brows curling. There was a flicker in his eyes, no longer soft and tender. They were predatory. My eyes fell on his lips as the air slipped between them. A throb pulsed between my thighs and I quickly moved my gaze. My heartbeat thudded… a little quicker now and I swallowed the lump in my throat.

I slowly pulled my hand back out of the hidden compartment beneath the dark marble counter, my knuckles scraping lightly against the wood of the interior frame. A thick, heavy, dust-jacketed volume that had been tucked away into the hollowed-out space of the bar.

He must be so confused and disoriented. I admired his bravery. It must be terrifying to be alone in a strange place without the ability to see, but he was perfectly calm.

"Provide the names together with their purposes to me at this moment." The man maintained his silence while looking at me with his defiant stare. The situation reached a higher level of intensity. I made a light cut across his forearm which produced blood but did not reach a dangerous depth. His body strained against the restraints while he shouted curses yet he maintained his position. I used the pliers to grip the cold iron and pulled out a thumbnail which produced a wet popping sound. His scream echoed through the library with an unrestrained animalistic sound. The secrets remained hidden in complete silence.

“This one weaves mystery and magic, but underneath, it’s a story about trust and power.” Her face softened. “I’ll take it.” As I wrapped the book, another man stepped in, younger, sharp-eyed, dressed in a rumpled suit. His gaze swept the shelves with a hunger I recognized all too well. “Looking for something… thrilling,” he said, voice low. I leaned forward slightly. “Try The Silent Corner, it’s about secrets that change everything.” He nodded, brows furrowed, then murmured, “Secrets change everything.” The bell jingled again. A teenager, headphones around his neck, glanced nervously at the counter. “Uh, do you have any fantasy? Like with dragons?”

I didn’t want to go, but I didn’t want to stay either. My feet moved on their own, following him out of the penthouse, into the sleek black car waiting below. The driver didn’t ask questions. Nobody ever did. The ride was silent, suffocating. I stared out the window, watching the city blur past, the neon lights streaking like blood against the darkness. My hands were cold, clammy. I clasped them tightly in my lap, trying to keep them from shaking. “You don’t have to do this,” I whispered, though my voice lacked conviction.

By the time Benjamin finished giving his statement at the police station and returned home, it was already past midnight. The moment he stepped into the house, he sensed something was wrong. It was too quiet. The massive mansion was shrouded in darkness. Not a single light was on. The occasional chirping of insects and whisper of wind in the courtyard suddenly felt jarring, eerily loud in the stillness. Benjamin frowned instinctively. No matter what time he came home, Nissa always left a light on for him. She once said that was what made it feel like home.
