I left his office with that line echoing in my head. Back in my office, I closed the blinds. Shut out the city. Shut out the noise. Just me and the silence. And him. Chapter 19: A Silence Too Loud to Bear Sophie had never known silence could be this loud. She sat curled up on the couch, staring blankly at the untouched cup of tea on the coffee table in front of her. The steam had long since disappeared, leaving it cold and uninviting. The city outside her apartment window was alive, a blur of flashing headlights, honking horns, and distant sirens. But none of it reached her. The sounds were just background noise to the storm raging inside her.

She got dressed fully, Pulling her jacket tighter, she stepped outside and walked briskly until the small bookstore came into view. The bell above the door chimed softly as she slipped inside. Her eyes wandered in search of that one book till she saw it: “The weight of silence.” Her breath caught. She pulled it down, fingers brushing the cover. The woman’s voice echoed in her mind: “That book is about healing”

"Are you deaf or just incompetent?" I blinked, snapping back into my body, and quickly straightened the stack in front of me like that might undo however long I'd actually zoned out for. "I'm sorry," I said quietly. "What were you looking for?" She rolled her eyes, dramatic, exaggerated. "Unbelievable. You work in a bookstore and you can't even pay attention." "I'm sorry." I repeated again "You already said that." I swallowed the anger rising in my throat. "Do you have The Silent Patient?"
