Chapter 1: The Lesson The kitchen was dark except for the soft glow of the refrigerator light that spilled across the marble floor. I crept down the stairs, careful not to make a sound. He examined the last page for a moment and noticed a brown stain at the top left corner of the page. He brought it closer to his eyes to see what it was, and he accidentally took a whiff of the page’s scent.
