I spoke almost in a whisper, my voice somewhere in between shaky and firm. The line crackled with static and for a moment, there was nothing but silence on the other end. Then, a voice, low and creepy, filled the silence, sending chills through me. "Sapphire Samantha Smith," it whispered, a twisted mockery of my own name. "Welcome."

Carmen laughed, already being pulled forward by Ava, who clearly had appointed herself the host of the night. The first game was simple—or so they claimed. It was titled ‘the Shoe Game’. Two chairs were placed in the center. Nathan and I were pushed down onto them, back to back. We stared into each other's eyes and even with the silence, I could hear Gwen's heart beating fast as her breathing became erratic. I always knew Gwen's loyalty to me was more than just admiration and if she wasn't important, I would have evicted her in a painless manner. "My lady." Gwen's smooth voice had me breaking the contact as I stood up, grabbing a pawn piece. "What is the most powerful piece in a game of chess?" I asked as I walked to my window and stared down. Father was talking to a messenger boy as I faced Gwen who was seriously thinking as she stared at the board on my desk.

I know he felt bad for me and he's probably worried. Today, we were awoken by the sound track of Maze Runner and I did everything to stay awake and drank coffee.
