Amora gives me an odd look, and I force another smile. “Oh, there are so many events before then. We have hiking, surfing lessons, a spa day, a wine tasting, you name it.” At the word surfing, Michael tenses. Weird. He loves surfing, or so I thought. Amora says goodbye and strolls off. Michael’s hand tightens on my waist. “Don’t go anywhere,” he grits out.

Leo offers. Gage reaches out his tanned copper haired arms to brace the pup, Pearl happily licks his face while wagging her tail. He pets her little white furry body. Chuckles escape him. His eyes have lightened. He continues to hold her close. “What can I help y’all with today? Your buying some gear I see. I will check y’all out at the register. Follow me.” Gage walks, a sturdy confident, unhurried walk. Smiling, revealing pearly teeth, Melody responds, “I want to see if they can do a surf lesson. We were out running around and close by.”

“Eric, do me a favor. Let’s just drop this.” I looked at the sister I had doted on since we were kids and felt a chill run through me. I was just about to speak when a server’s voice suddenly came from outside the room. “Professors, this way please.” Eric’s eyes lit up. A flattering smile instantly spread across his face. “That must be Professor Jackson!” He quickly turned to the other students. “Everyone stand up! Let’s make a good impression!” “And you, clean up that mess on the table!”

“I don't think I can do this.” He straightens and steps in close. “You were courageous enough to make a deal with the devil. You can definitely handle a surf lesson.” If I didn't know this was all in service of our fake engagement, I would think he was challenging me on purpose. Like he was encouraging me to believe in myself or something equally implausible. “Fine.” I step on the surfboard where he indicates. “But I'm still not getting in the water.” “We'll see.” His hands settle on my hips. “Keep your knees soft,” he instructs. “You’re not locking into place, you’re ready to move with the wave.”

Scott dozes in the shade and opens one eye every now and then to tell me I am beautiful when I am frowning at a line. On the third morning, we try surfing. Our instructor is a woman with copper hair who tucks a hibiscus behind her ear and tells us we’ll both do fine. Scott stands easily and rides in like a kid who grew up with a board under his feet. I get to my knees and then perform an elegant slow slide into the water. “You almost had it,” Scott calls proudly. We go again. I stand for one glorious heartbeat and then sit down very quickly and with great dignity. Scott rides a small wave and jumps off with his arms spread. He’s showing off, and we both know it.

Chapter 35. "That's the spirit!" The instructor commended her, giving her a thumbs up. Daciana smiled awkwardly at him as she and the triplets stepped forward to take their surfboards off his hands. “All right. Tonight, you'll be learning how to maintain balance on a surfboard and also how to catch waves to move you on top of the waters." The instructor began, his tone calm and patient. "If anyone has any questions or complaints, please, alert me."

We were swimming that afternoon. The shore was rowdy with the boys. We do water sports. Jet ski, snorkeling and surfing. Gio taught me to surf so I was sad to teach his friends. If there’s one sport I can do well, it’s surfing. It's one of my hobbies everytime I go to the beach. It's just nice to feel like you can keep up with the waves. It feels like I can tame the waves. "So that's it!" I laughed and encouraged Gio and in less than five seconds he was wiped out again.
