Alex handed me a board, adjusting the strap on my ankle.
“Alright, first lesson,” he said, stepping onto his own board in the sand, “you’ll paddle out, then when you feel the wave catch you, pop up like this.”
He demonstrated with exaggerated flair, then stumbled dramatically and fell onto the sand, earning a surprised laugh from me.
“Very professional,” I said, smirking.
“Hey, humor is part of the method,” he said, winking. “Keeps you relaxed.”
We paddled out together. The ocean was calm at first, but the swells began to rise slowly. My arms ached with effort, but Alex was patient, always close by, encouraging me.
