I said, grinning from teeth to teeth like a child. We walked into the library. It looked like it had been a while, since it was in use. We went through several sections which included, finance, self-improvement, ethics, business amongst all. I caught a glimpse of a book I had been wanting to read, “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. I picked it immediately, and started going through it. After a while, I noticed I wasn't hearing any sound from the cook. I looked around and found her wiping tears off her eyes with the hem of her apron.

He smiled. “Aurora, I’ve waited eight years for you. I can wait four more hours.” The drive to Aiden’s house was quiet. Before I got out of Little Genius, I set a timer for sixty minutes on my phone. I played with my bag strap, looking at the boring view outside, trying to calm down.

I picked up the book and held it in both hands and thought about a man at a bookstore counter in October asking Carol for something specific and Carol disappearing for thirty seconds and coming back with exactly the right thing. I thought about page forty-seven. About active patient waiting. About ten days. Then I put the book in my apron pocket, close to where my heart was doing its complicated thing, and went back to work. There was always work to do. And work, this January, was the thing holding the ten days together until they became something else entirely.
