I looked horrible. I swallowed hard. Then again. And fucking again. Trying desperately to force the lump lodged in my throat to disappear. It wouldn't move. Wouldn't budge. It felt like someone had dropped a stone straight down my throat and left it there, heavy and immovable. Every swallow hurt. Every breath hurt. Everything hurt. I bit down hard on my lip to stop the tears from falling. Hard enough that a metallic taste bloomed inside my mouth. I barely noticed it. "Just breathe," I whispered to myself.
