My head was too full, my heart even fuller. Sayora stopped suddenly and crouched, parting a patch of moss with the tip of her knife. “Starleaf,” she murmured, voice calm and precise. “Rare, and only blooms after a storm. Look closely, child. See how the edges glow faintly silver? That’s how you know it’s still fresh.” I was tempted to ask why she had buried the words that left my mouth. “I know.” She had said. But then she moved on from it like those words never left my mouth. I did too for a brief moment.

Within minutes, it was over. Silence fell like a curtain, heavy and absolute. The garden, once a haven of peace, was now littered with bodies, the white stone paths slick with blood. The lilies—pure, delicate—had been stained crimson at their roots, their petals splattered with gore. And the vyreleaf, the prize they had come for, stood untouched in the moonlight. Its dark green leaves trembled gently in the breeze, as if mocking the carnage around it.

I followed her gaze. It was a tree, unlike any tree around us; it was huge, it appeared to have its own space in the middle of the forest. The leaves were darker and the veins were glimmering in a faint shade of yellow. Long branches hung downward from the top, giving it an almost otherworldly presence. A leaf fell from it, instead of staying on the ground, it disappeared as soon as it touched the soil. I gasped. I bent down to touch the spot where it disappeared but poked my index finger on a sharp rock that I did not realise was there.

Moving around the pool, I stood at the far edge, the absolute perfect position to view the whole villa that came up behind it in magnificent splendor.
