It felt like if I even breathed out loud, he'd hear. I ducked behind the bedroom door just as the front door swung open with a deafening crack that echoed off the thin walls. I pressed my back against the wall, my hand clamped firmly over my mouth, trying to steady my breathing. My pulse was so loud in my ears and my fingers were trembling against my mouth. There was no way I could leave. I was trapped in the bedroom with no way of escape, no window big enough to drop through safely while a monster was in the living room. A monster my mother refused to leave.

Others had their arms hanging out of the cage as if they had made a last-ditch attempt to break their locks before they succumbed to the silver. “What have you done to them?” she hissed. There was no answer. She didn’t expect one, but her anger rose with each step towards the door. The monster at the front banged twice on the door, and a lock turning echoed. And then, once again, the door scrapped along the floor as it slid open.

I chirp as I pull myself up, standing up. "Goodnight, Miss Ella! Dream about angels." They all chorus together. I dart my eyes around each one of them one more time, a smile plastered on my face, but fear cloaking it slightly. "Yeah, okay.” I clasp my hands together, waiting for the miracle he was going to perform when I suddenly hear him step back. “Step away from the door,” he says, voice further from where it was a second ago. “Move back.” My heart pounds against my chest as I quickly race behind the big sofa, my aunt's favorite, and crouch low behind it. I lift my face over the armrest, staring at the door… waiting. I hear a rush of movement outside, and then–

Leaning against his car with his hands tucked inside his pockets, he watched me make my way toward him. A slow smile spread across his lips as his eyes dragged over me a little too long, studying me from head to toe like we hadn’t just seen each other yesterday. “Dad, bring Mom back before midnight or she’ll turn into a monster!” Adriana yelled before slamming the front door shut. “Will do, sweetheart!” Ricochet yelled back, waving one hand while the other quickly caged itself around my waist. “That kid,” I murmured under my breath. “Between you and me, I think I’m the real monster when we’re in bed. Right, baby?” he whispered against my ear.
