Now it was simply where I was. Standing in the after without the before pressing against me from behind, the specific quality of having arrived somewhere rather than moving toward it.

And in the distance Something moved. Huge. Wrong. My chest tightened instinctively. Because I felt it before I understood it. That presence. Not contained like before. Not quiet. Not distant. It was here. Fully. Watching. Waiting. My voice came out softer this time. “…that’s it, isn’t it?”

Even though he was gone, it was as if he’d left behind a ripple in the air. It wasn’t loud or overwhelming. It was subtle, like the first rays of sunlight breaking through a stormy sky, tentative but undeniable. It was a reminder that maybe, just maybe, things could get better. We were still moving carefully around each other, still trying not to force clarity where we weren’t ready for it. But when he left that morning, he paused at the door. Actually paused. That alone was different.
