She snickered. I tried not to laugh, but it was close because Valkyrie winked at me while he gave her a discomforted look. Valkyrie and I take our seats and listen as Jaxon conveys the information we’ve gathered. My heart jumps out of my chest when he recounts my plan and asks for insight. The Valkyrie's unguligrade legs were built to keep the mech balanced under heavy fire, sloping backwards at the knee joint and ending in two massive, hoof-like feet.

She looked at Thea before continuing. “Other stories tell of similar but benevolent beings,” Amethyst said. “The Valkyries. They were also associated with battlefields. They served the gods, taking the dead to Valhalla.” Thea looked at Xavier. He shrugged his shoulders. Thea turned back to Amethyst. “Are you saying bad vampires are Keres, and good vampires are Valkyries, but the Valkyries went extinct?” Thea said. “It’s a theory. Valkyries haven’t been heard of in a thousand years. The only people who might be old enough to know for sure are vampires. The oldest vampires,” Amethyst said.

The pressure on my throat vanished, and I dropped to the ground, coughing violently, air burning my lungs. Through my tears, I saw Iris. I was scared she wouldn't show up. I was scared it was my last moment. But there she was! She positioned herself between us now, eyes shimmering like dual moons, her aura enveloping me like a tide of tranquility. Her wings spread out behind her in brilliant defiance, and the earth shook under her bare feet “Ah… sister,” Valkyrie drawled, unfazed. “I always thought you were the wise one. Valeria smiled. “Ever heard of the Valkyries?” she asked. “Of course, everyone knows about them. They are very powerful; they have helped with a lot of wars, and they are fierce slayers. I heard the Valkyries and Vladimir are in a battle; apparently there was a war Vladimir was supposed to help with, but the Valkyries sisters got involved and won. Now, Vladimir is searching for them, but no one knows who they are or what they are or where they are; they are like ghosts. Seen only when they want to be seen,” Egan said.

Axel shot me a sideways glance, his eyes narrowing slightly before returning his attention to her. "We appreciate your hospitality," Axel began, clearing his throat to continue, but Valkyrie cut him off with a wave of her hand. "I am Valkyrie, remember?" she repeated, her eyes glinting with a knowing light as she flashed her rotten teeth once more. Valkyrie's eyes seemed to cloud over, her gaze drifting inward as she spoke. "She is feeling a sharp pain... because she has refused to regenerate her bond with her mate. And she is pregnant." I felt like I'd been punched in the gut, my eyes wide with shock as I stared at Valkyrie. But Axel's face remained impassive, his expression a mask of calm.
