Adnan was watching her quietly, and even then she could see the skepticism in his eyes.
"I'm not telling you this so you'll feel sorry for me," she said. "You asked for the truth, and that's what I'm telling you. Nothing more, nothing less."
Adnan leaned forward in his seat, placing his hands on the table.
"I'm sorry," he said. "I didn't know."
"Of course you didn't," she said, restraining the tears. She wasn't about to cry in front of him.
"If he truly did that to you," he asked, "then why the animosity towards us? Why the hatred?"
