We keep talking—childhood stories, embarrassing moments, things we believed as kids that we know now are ridiculous. At some point the conversation shifts deeper and Jeremy asks, “What’s one thing you’ve never told anyone?”

I look down, breathing unevenly. He doesn’t let go of the conversation. His voice stays steady. “That’s why we talk about it now before anything else. So I know what to avoid. So you know what to look for. If anything feels wrong, if anything sends your heart racing in the wrong way, you tell me. We don’t ignore it.” I nod slowly, unable to meet his eyes. “I’m not going to pretend this is easy, Red. But if we don’t talk about it, something could catch you off guard. We eat. We talk. We do not talk about the hospital. We do not talk about the break room. We talk about the small things, the kind of small things that a person talks about on a third date, except we are not on a third date, we are on a redo, which is its own small category, the category of people who have already done the small things and are now doing them on purpose.
