Outside, the black car on the street below had not moved. Elena watched it through the window while the conversation continued around her. It did not move for the entire meal. Patient. Waiting. The way a man waits when he has been waiting for twenty years and has learned to make waiting indistinguishable from permanence. Tomorrow, he would understand that the thing he had been waiting to take had never been available to him. Had been held, from every angle and every distance, by people who were better at waiting than he was. And had better reasons.

“Fair.” A guy walks past us, nodding quickly before moving on. Too quick. Elijah notices it too. “They feel it but they’re not saying anything,” he says “They don’t have to,” I reply Silence again. “What do we do?” Elijah asks “Hold the line,” I say “That’s it.” he snaps Elijah runs a hand over his face, frustrated. “I hate waiting,” he says “Then don’t wait,” I reply. “We don’t sit here hoping nothing happens. We remind people why they don’t test us.”

Nox waits in the shadows. Cinder waits at the edge. The Circle watches. Tomorrow, we talk. Or we fight. Either way, we do not run.
