Romans & histoires Waiting

She would be mortified if she knew I was following along but I love to see her blush when she is shy and embarrassed. “You are not going to tell her about the note from Alpha Matt?” Stan asks through our mind-link. “Not yet. I do not want to ruin the fun they are having. We will stay close, and the warriors are on high alert,” I reply. The warriors found nothing and nobody outside at any of the entrances. It pissed me off that we had been so close. The next time I see that Alpha, he is a dead wolf.

But a new code tag appeared in the system’s backend: :: NONVERBAL PRESENCE SIGNAL – TYPE: VALE :: COMMENT: **PAUSE INITIATED BY USER STILLNESS INTERPRETED AS HOLD. USER DID NOT REQUEST. USER WAS SIMPLY PRESENT. Nova’s brows furrowed at her monitoring station. “That’s the third time today.” Lucan, glancing up: “What is?” “It’s interpreting her stillness like she gave an order.” Lucan leaned closer. “What kind of order?” Nova turned the screen so he could see: “The kind that says ‘wait until I’m ready.’” Eden rounded another hallway. A maintenance drone floated by, adjusting a ventilation grate.

Maya was at work when her phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number. She almost ignored it. Spam, probably. The usual nonsense. But something made her look. Someone is still waiting for you. She stared at the words. Her heart stopped. Then raced. Then stopped again. She read it three times. Four. Five. Someone is still waiting for you. No name. No context. Just those six words. She looked around the office. Everyone is working. Normal. No one is watching.

The single check mark on the screen felt like a closed door. I tried a man at the bank next. The one who normally replied within minutes, sometimes seconds. I typed a short message, watched the delivery confirmation appear, and then sat there staring at the screen while nothing else happened. No reply, no typing indicator, just the quiet of my own living room and the cold polished floor under my bare feet.

Noah who was peeping into his phone eagerly clenched and loosened his hands. He sucked air into his lungs and shook his head, "He asked to wait. He is looking at it on his laptop." Noah nodded. They waited all this while, it was not going to be so hard that they could not wait. Impatience sat across their cheeks, staring at the status of his activeness below his name. "Why is it taking so long?" Noah stressed. God, did it have to take this long. Like this was worse than standing in the queue of an ATM, expecting your turn to come next.

Why aren't they attacking. They wolves slowly creep away. Kali still whimpering, I stand my ground snarling towards the trees ready to attack anyone who dares touch her. I feel my fur sticking up on every inch of my body. My blood boiling. I hear them disappear Into the distance. Seconds later Jordie, Hazel, Amy and a few rouges arrive to the scene. I mind link Jordie "search the perimeters make sure they're not lurking in the distance." He nods and takes off behind us.

:| At least, let me know that you’re alright. :| And also maybe… if we’re alright. She was waiting patiently with eyes wide open. Five minutes. Twenty minutes. One hour. Until someone on the other side was typing. Her eyes sparkled, expecting to receive a hopeful message.

The old man continued to explain frantically, “It was Miss Isabella! She’s been sending people to watch me this whole time… Mr. Deen, it really had nothing to do with me!” By the time Callum and I stepped through the door, that was the scene waiting for us.

Waiting. I wanted to sink myself in the corner of a dark room, cocooned in a blanked, crumpled, ignored. Eyes shut tight and doing nothing at all until time passes by and I am gone. I wish I wasn’t human. Stupid humans, wanting to survive. Even the unforgivable ones. I sighed as I looked at the computer screen with Liza’s smiling face on it. A massive single world in bold underneath. Missing.
