Three Wishes Liane Moriarty Novels & Stories

"Should I… say my third wish now?" Liam nodded, leaning back. But instead of speaking, Alina looked down, fidgeting with her fingers, clearly nervous. Liam frowned, trying to hide his impatience. "Guess you don’t have anything to say," he said, starting to stand. "Wait," Alina said suddenly, grabbing his hand and pulling him back down to sit beside her. "It’s… naughty," she whispered. Liam froze, a spark of interest lighting his eyes. He had never been this eager to hear one of her wishes. This is the first time she wants to do something a little… daring with me, he thought, curiosity and anticipation rising.

"Should we go back? I think we've walked enough for one day." "No," he refused to turn back and pointed at the trees instead. "We're almost there." A few more steps and an even slower pushing pace from her, they were under the trees. She looked up in wonder and held out her palms as the purple petals fell around them like confetti. "Make a wish," she brought her palms close to Liam's face, and he closed his eyes as he gently blew the petals away. "What did you wish for?" She asked. "It won't come true if I tell you."

"If you love her so much, then I'll make sure she dies!" Charlie screamed and caught me in his arms. "Maddie, don't do this to me!" Lucas' face went white as he kicked Cynthia away. "Maddie, I'll take you to the hospital. Stay with us. Please hold on. Don't close your eyes." I could not hear what came after that because I had already died. Before long, I arrived in a completely dark space. A voice said, "Sonia O'Neill, you have fulfilled Maddison's wish. You can return home now."

My eyes flicked to the clock on the wall as the hands slowly ticked forward, but there was no sign of him returning. The wound burned even though it was the middle of winter. I was sweating from the pain, my body betraying me. Desperate, I reached for my phone, but as soon as I unlocked it, a notification popped up, showing me a new post from Grace. [Stargazing with the Big Guy,] it read, with a picture of them both camping on a mountainside. I let out a bitter laugh. The algorithm sure knew exactly how to twist the knife when I was at my lowest.

I make it short, and he looks at me through narrowed eyes, confused, but I decide not to explain my crazy interaction with whoever that was, but do what I brought him here to do, and take the checkbook from my bag. “Tell me your name, please,” I request as I fill in the other fields, including the amount. “Why?” He asks suspiciously, making me smile. “Because I want to make your second biggest wish come true,” I answer as I look at him expectantly, and he opens his mouth, then closes it, not sure if he should talk, or if he can. “J-James Wilson.” He stutters in a shaky voice, probably realizing what I’m doing, and after I finish, I rip the check and give it to him.

A gentle breeze stirred her long, dark hair, revealing a frosty, indifferent expression that made her seem unapproachable. "I'll have you know that Ms. Sloan already has a boyfriend! But he's suffering from kidney failure. If they can't find a suitable donor for him in time, he won't have much time left." "That's right. I heard about that, too! He's been staying in our VIP ward, and his name's Zachary Larson. I heard the two of them made a promise. Ms. Sloan's going to fulfill 99 wishes for him." "Wow. That's so romantic! If only I had someone to dote on me like that when I'm sick."

At the back of the room, there was a space where I knew a copy of Clarissa's third mock exam scores and college entrance exam results would soon be posted. I opened my mother's latest diary entry. As long as I am in the Poole family for a day, if you dared to come looking for Master Alex and dared to seek trouble with Jane, then I will smash your filthy leg up! Listen carefully, I'll smash it!
