Observing it he quirked a questioning brow at the title. Murderous case files, a thriller mystery book he had read years ago. Mainly consisting of gore and graphic details of killing he had dropped it, never even getting past the first chapter. If he recalled the very first sentence described a horrific scene of a man who had cut his wife's throat. Many would have stopped reading at the very first scene yet for some reason this woman was so intrigued with the book that she had nearly forgotten she was conversing with me. How interesting. The more I learn about her the more she seems to shock me.

“IT’S JUST I HAD a different book in mind when ink spilled on this one, plus what’s left to do in a finished book?” They, of course, ignored me Completely probably deciding if I would not explain, they were just going to proceed. One of the three waved their hand above the inky darkness we were standing on, and instantly a book on a pedestal was in front of them on the floor. It showed off my title, ‘1001 Dark Tales’. I instantly held my breath, hoping they didn’t realize what that meant. But if they had, they said nothing. Instead, they just started flipping through the pages of the book, looking for which store to choose.

It’s pretty good so far.”

I flipped to the next page. “The voice won’t stop. Keeps telling me what I am. What I’ll do. Monster. Killer. Can’t escape it. Can’t make it stop.” The next page was worse. It didn’t even make sense, not that the first two pages did, either. “Blood. Blood. Blood. Blood. Gore. A knife. Need the knife if I’m going to complete his ritual.” The rest of the page dissolved into illegible scribbles. I kept reading. It was page after page of the same thing. Fragmented thoughts about death and blood and murder. Some of the words were truly vile. Some in all capital letters, others written so tiny they were like the text form of whispers.

She moved with a jerky, erratic speed that defied the laws of biology. Before I could scream, she was over me. The air grew frigid, smelling of ozone and rot. I felt the cold pressure of her hand on my chest, a sensation like touching dead ice. Then came the pain—sharp, blinding, and absolute. A blade, or perhaps just her elongated, needle-like fingers, pierced my side. The sensation of tearing flesh, the hot spray of blood, the sudden, overwhelming darkness as the room tilted and collapsed.
