I agreed and fell asleep quickly. It seemed like I wasn’t asleep for more than a few minutes when I was suddenly back in that room with my sister and now, two brothers. They were all shackled to the floor. I did notice that the window was no longer tall, but wide. One of them had turned the window sideways, and I know why. During the era of the Salem Witch Trials, the houses in the affected areas started being built with one window at an odd angle or sideways. It was called a Witch’s Window because a witch wouldn’t be able to fly through it on her broom. It was a human attempt to deter witches from entering their homes.

Turn. He is restless. He is wrestling with ghosts I can't see. Suddenly, he stops. He turns around. He looks up. He looks directly at my window. I freeze. I don't step back. I don't hide. I let him see me. I am wearing the silk robe. My hair is loose. I am a white wraith in the window frame. He stares at me. Even across the distance, I can feel the connection. It vibrates through the air, a tension wire pulled tight between us. It ignores the glass. It ignores the stone. It ignores the bloodline.
