He stood there, speechless, until his phone rang again.
This time, his hesitation lasted only a moment. He made his choice.
Without another word, he turned and walked out the door toward her as though she were the only one who truly mattered.
There was nothing else left to say. I blocked his number and then deleted every last trace of him.
The next morning, he never showed up.
It was fine, though.
My parents were with me and watched as I was wheeled into the operating room.
The sterile, cold air inside the room sent a shiver through me. Even then, it wasn’t as cold as the feeling of a scalpel cutting into flesh.
