The book fell. She stared at the cover. Her lips curved not into a smile, but more like disgust. “To Kill a Mockingbird?” she said, holding it like it was something dirty. “Where did you find this?” “On the shelf, Mama. In the American lit section. I just … I wanted to know why his name is the same as mine.” She was silent for a moment. Her eyes squinted, studying my face like a judge questioning a lying witness. “This book isn’t for you.”

His voice drops to a murmur, "Shhh, doll face. It's going to be okay, I got you." I sniff and my words spill out between sobs. "How could he do that? You should've seen his face, Atticus. He wanted to kill me. He just—" My voice cracks. "He just threw me away like I was nothing to him." His hand comes up, rough fingers catching my chin and tilting my face toward him. I can't look away, not when those dark eyes bore into mine. But the sight cuts me open because I don't just see Atticus. I see Silas too. The same bone structure, the same sharp jawline, the same damn eyes.

Zade says, pouring me some water and placing the glass in front of me. “Thanks.” “I will say what I need to because if you’ve somehow made her forget that you were the one who killed-” “Atticus, stop.” I close my eyes, knowing what he’s about to say. “We were in battle, we killed them - they killed us… two sides at war…. I am scared that once Atticus kills them, he will lose himself even more. My mother once told me, killing whether it is justified or not, tears at the soul. You should only do it as a last resort. Since I have experienced killing someone, I know her statement is true. Jasmine hasn't left my mind. I now know that even if the person deserves to die, it still hurts you, and Atticus is already hurt. So hurt. Wounded to his core, actually.

Spluttering I took a deep breath, Atticus was coughing as he clung to my neck. There was a splash in the water in front of me, Aunt Bonnie started to make her way across the river, losing sight of her, I once again began to kick as hard as I could. The water went into my mouth and up my nose causing me to cough and convulse, before I realised what was happening, I slammed into a large boulder. The world went black my last thought was for Atticus as I drifted into darkness.
