My stomach dropped. The book slipped from my fingers. Tomorrow. Not next week. Not after seven days. Tomorrow. The servant bowed his head. "The summons comes directly from Elder Rowan." Silence filled the library. I swallowed hard. The council had made their move. And somehow I knew tomorrow would change everything. The question was whether I was ready for it. Deep down... I feared the answer was no.

"Well, people change. You like different things at different stages of your life." I stood silently off to the side. I, on the other hand, had never changed. I had always loathed classic literature. Though Naomi didn't open the box right away, I wasn't in any rush. I looked down at my hands and noticed they had become a little more transparent. Naomi felt like something was off, but she didn't dwell on it for too long. The next day came. Ever since Bella's passing, the Dudley residence had been without a mistress. Jared didn't care for Naomi or Bryson either, so he left the entire house to them.

Distance, I learned, is not a thing you create by stepping away. It is a thing you carry in your chest and pray will harden before your heart betrays you. I woke that morning resolved to be careful. Not hopeful. Not foolish. Careful. The kind of careful that keeps one alive in a palace that devours girls like me without ceremony.
