“Checking out.” “I’m right here.” “No. You’re physically present. That’s not the same thing.” “That sounds like something you practiced saying.” “It’s accurate.” “There it is again.” I leaned back slightly. Crossed my arms. “…you all say that too easily.” “Because it applies.” “To everything?” “When it fits.” “And you think this fits?” “I know it does.” That tone. That quiet certainty. It wasn’t loud. Your stories, your thoughts, we need them. But how you express them is even more important.” His voice is softer now, almost meditative. “You believe that?”

Nate says in a quiet tone of voice. Even his way of speaking grates on her nerves. The quiet, whisper soft tone feeling fake and contrived to her. It feels as if he is talking softly for her benefit so as not to spook her and she is not sure why, but she finds it demeaning, as if he were talking down to her.

I stomp my feet and look at him for a few minutes. "Why?" I ask him calmly as I smile. But deep inside, I'm going to kill him for telling me that my story is trash! "Too much, passive voice, comma splice, informality, and the use of punctuation is wrong. Oops, I didn't mean that your story is bad, but your writing style is." He teasingly says that he is getting even on me after what I did to him. My chest is getting heavy as I look at him. "I'm sorry, I didn't have time to edit because it's only an impromptu writing," I calmly explain while smiling at him, but deep inside. He is already being tortured in my head.

The kind that comes when the storm has already passed and all that’s left is silence and ash. He stepped closer, his breath hot against my face, his voice dropping to a whisper. “Do you know what really irritates me, Eve?” He tilted his head, eyes burning with disdain. “Your ugliness. It leaks out of you. Every word. Every look. Every breath you—” “Watch your mouth.” The words came from behind him—low, dark, and commanding. The kind of tone that doesn’t need to be repeated because it already carries the weight of power.

The constant dismissiveness. It clung to the air around us like static, sharp and humiliating. And seeing the way Anthony’s jaw tightened, the way his shoulders went rigid every time someone spoke to us with that tone, I knew he felt it too. Was this what Anthony faced everytime he showed up for these kinds of events? Was that why he strived so hard to remain at the top.
