For one terrible second, I cannot move. Then the door opens slightly wider. I turn quickly and hurry down the hall before anyone can see me. My legs shake as I reach the stairs. I do not stop running until I reach the servant quarters. Only then do I press my back against the wall and breathe. My hands are trembling again. This secret is becoming heavier. More dangerous. Every day it grows larger inside the Alpha’s house. And I am trapped in the middle of it. The next morning something unexpected happens. The Alpha returns earlier than usual.

I hoped Ethan had gotten my message and was on his way to find me. As my eyes gradually adapted to the darkness, I realized that I was confined to a small, enclosed space—it seemed as though I was locked in a closet. The realization that I was trapped in such a confined area made me uneasy, as I had always been uncomfortable in closed spaces. Time seemed to drag on endlessly, and I couldn't tell how many hours had passed. My arms throbbed with discomfort, and my exhaustion was constantly dropping with weariness. The closet doors suddenly flew open, startling me as an unknown person entered the dimly lit space. It was too dark to see who it was, but I was too tired and scared to care.

My throat tightened. I whispered, “No.” The spine responded. “You can’t refuse.” The corridor trembled. The door behind me closed silently. The symbol faded. The hum grew louder. The air grew colder. I realized I was trapped. Inside the spine. Inside the system. Inside the choice. I stood alone in the corridor. The key burning in my palm. My heart racing. My mind screaming. And then the voice spoke again. “You will meet the one you were meant to protect.” My breath caught.

If I ever get out of this tinderbox, I’m sure I will have bruises all down my sides– but getting out is seeming less and less likely. I did not waste a single moment after Arabella locked me in the closet, immediately beginning to scream and yank at the immovable door knob. When that didn’t work I tried climbing the shelves to reach the vent in the ceiling, but they collapsed beneath my weight and built a veritable pyre of linen on the closet floor. At least when the fire reaches me I’ll go fast.

I question. She sucks in her bottom lip guiltily. “Where, Eden?” “In the storage closet in the kitchen,” she concedes. I walk across the creaky floor to lift my shirt and throw it over my head. She watches me get dressed, her arms now covering her exposed body uncomfortably as she tugs the dress back into place. “I’ll be back in a minute. Stay here,” I order in a warning tone, striding over to the door. “Oh, just a warning, she may still be unconscious, and if not, then I’m guessing she’ll be more than a little pissed.”
