They pushed onward, the old road barely visible beneath packed snow and overgrown shrubs. Lila’s boots soaked through. Her legs burned with cold. Still, she forced herself to move. She could feel something ahead—something off-kilter. Her pulse picked up.
Then, between the thinning trees, the port came into view.

The rusted skeleton of a dock extended out over the frozen bay, covered in snow and black ice. Old shipping crates lay scattered and half-buried, and a toppled watchtower slanted at a dangerous angle. The harbor had long been abandoned to time and weather—but not entirely forgotten.
