I couldn't stop the joyful smile that spread across my face. Golden sunlight spilled through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Alex lifted a hand to shield my eyes with easy tenderness. From the kitchen, the gentle simmer of soup filled the air with a rich, savory fragrance. Beside me, he spoke excitedly about all the places we would travel to together. On the wall, the cuckoo clock announced the hour. It was my birthday. A tiny mechanical bird sprang out, chirping its cheerful song, "Joy to Emily! Joy to Emily!"

Kayhan bellowed into the empty trees, his voice sounding hoarse, broken, and desperate. “Is this what you wanted for me all along? Does my misery amuse you? I swear, I’ll find you and kill you myself, do you hear me?” I narrowed my eyes, confused by the strange name, but what happened next made my skin turn completely pale. Kayhan suddenly collapsed fully to the ground, his body turning rigid as his vision darkened. His eyes rolled back into his head, shifting from their normal color into a pitch black, bottomless abyss. A chilling, rasping laugh rippled from Kayhan’s throat, a terrifying sound dripping with ancient malice that echoed through the silent forest.

"This isn't up for discussion. I promise you this—if we have a second child, you can raise that one yourself." Ryan finally gave in through his tears. I sat alone in the car and burst into laughter. I laughed at the fact that everything I'd once believed was happiness had been nothing but layer upon layer of deception and betrayal. The two of them returned to the villa. I arrived thirty minutes later. I stepped out of the car, walked to the front door, and pressed the doorbell.

said the announcer. He waved his fingers at the holographic wheel, and it immediately spun with a dizzying speed. Its colored wedges blurred and rapidly CLACKED while it did so. Eventually it slowed, along with the noise, and the pointer up top ended up on a dark green wedge with the silhouette of three trees on it. The announcer’s eyes went wide with overblown surprise. “Oh wow,” he said. “The Dark Forest! I’ll bet some of you are really happy about that! It’s a brutal course to fight in. Let’s go take a look!”

I vowed internally to settle the beef with Felix once we went back. As for Matthew, his inconsiderate act made me realize that it wasn't worth keeping him as a friend. The guys in the group managed to hype us up, and the women were all excited and giddy. Soon enough, we forgot what happened and enjoyed ourselves on the rides. Just when I believed I was trapped forever, the tree suddenly came alive, its branches transforming into a gaping maw that swallowed me whole. My heart pounded in my chest as I fell through the darkness, a bone-chilling scream escaping my lips. With a resounding thud, I landed on the dusty ground, disoriented but relieved to be free from the tree's clutch

The result was a Hybrid Horror. "Look at them," Leo whispered, his indigo glass arm beginning to hum in sympathetic resonance. A nearby birch tree had developed the unmistakable, haughty sneer of Director Sterling, the man who had signed the original Ark eviction notices. The tree’s leaves were no longer green; they were a shimmering, metallic gold, vibrating with the Director’s translated thoughts. “...Finally... the air... the dirt... it belongs to the Shareholders again...” the tree whispered, the sound like dry leaves skittering across stone.

"You animal! Just how much did Jovana pay you to keep this act up? Spit it out now! Where is she?" As he spoke, he picked up a long stick from the ground and used it to whack the homeless man. Blood instantly streamed down the man's face. But still looking indignant, he dragged himself toward the pear tree. Andrew's gaze followed his movement. For some reason, the pear tree felt familiar. He trudged toward the tree, reaching out to touch it. Just then, a voice rang out from the entrance. "I know where Jovana is."

The weather was foggy and no one was around. The place was pretty scary. Anyone could be scared by just hearing about a deep dark part of the forest. But that tall man did not look scared at all. He looked absolutely fine. He reached closer towards a big tree. He started chanting something as he set his palm on the huge log of the tree. The log started burning in a few seconds. A big hole appeared in the tree.

There might be an invisible door in the tree or there might be a secret code to make the tree disappear or… “Dun dun sa ma kahe du ma!” Tahoma said the same incantation he did last time. The same thing that happened to that tree, happened to this tree too. Something invisible cut a door out of the tree but there was no doorknob this time. The door opened itself. They could not see anything on the other side but darkness. Were they entering another passageway? They hoped not. Walking into a narrow passage where heat was their light wasn’t comfortable or interesting to be in.
