The words seemed alive. Breathing. Watching. A cold chill crawled down her spine as the silver mark on her stomach pulsed painfully beneath her fingertips. Then the second message appeared not written in blood, written in silver light. Trust no one. Icarra stumbled back, her wolf growled violently inside her chest, behind her, the tent flap snapped open. Kaelen entered first, Lucian followed a second later, both froze the moment they saw the warning. Kaelen’s eyes darkened instantly.

“We do not deploy primary asset.” I exhaled, forcing the override of instinct, letting discipline win over impulse. Harder than combat. Always harder. Second alert, transit crash, chemical leak. “Also staged,” I said. “Yes.” Third, data orphanage center breach, child identity vault. That one twisted deeper. “They’re layering moral triggers,” Observer One said. “Yes,” Dominic replied. “Which means the real site is emotionally neutral.” I scanned the blank zones, the places with no alarms, no symbols, no drama.

“I’m not saying you’re wrong. But who would want to hurt you, Elaine? Who could possibly have a reason?” I opened my mouth to respond but faltered. I was unable to come up with an answer. I’d been asking myself the same question ever since the accident. And I still didn’t have a clue. Trevor, however, was staring at me intently. “Wait…” His brows furrowed. “You said your wolf warned you about it, right?” “Y-Yes,” I replied, unsure of where she was going with this. Trevor swallowed hard. “Your spirit wolf has a keen perception. It’s rare but not impossible. I can’t believe I am saying this but remember Tristan’s warning? Looks like his hunch is correct after all.”

“That ‘mutt’ might give us the behavioral markers we need to complete the second half of the assignment and be done with this earlier than expected.” The way he said ‘this’ and the possibility of what it meant—us getting closer with every passing day—didn’t slip through my mind, but instead, I asked, “Which includes?” “Pattern recognition. Triggers. Pre-shift trauma cues.” He paused. “And whether their rogue state is reversible.” I raised an eyebrow. “And what if they snap and try to kill us?” Liam finally met my gaze, something unreadable flickering in his eyes. “Then we’ll know what provokes them.”

Blood dripped down her arm, hot and sticky, but she ignored it—a minor wound compared to the cost of failure. Her phone buzzed, the sound oddly mundane in the aftermath. She checked the screen. One message, simple and chilling: You were warned. She stared at the words, a slow, dangerous smile curling her lips. They thought threats would work? They thought she was frightened by shadows? They had no idea what they’d unleashed. “Oh,” she whispered, voice rough with promise. “You’re going to regret that.”

All of the above? “You don’t feel it yet,” he said. “But they do.” He gestured around. And every wolf took a step back. Because the air around me felt like it was moving. A mild beat. It was beginning to feel like the room was breathing with me. I mean hypothetically speaking. My hands trembled. “What—what is happening?” “You are awakening.” His voice softened in a terrifying, reverent way. “Stress triggers your bloodline. Fear sharpens it. Rage feeds it.”
