Lisa froze. All this time she'd been altering the dress, and she hadn't even noticed the chip hidden inside. The boutique manager was even paler, wiping cold sweat from his face as panic set in. But Lisa still wouldn't admit defeat. "It's a lie! She wanted to steal my dress. She planted the chip in there! If not, how come the boutique staff never found it after all their alterations? Each step they take makes the earth groan. “Stay back!” one of the knights barks, drawing his sword. “I don't think they are going to listen to him,” Pip whispers, poking her head from my scarf.

Drums echoed from a distant courtyard, and colourful wrappers danced like fire as women twirled them in rhythm. Sandra walked through the stalls with a woven basket on her hip, picking up yams and smoked fish for Arden. She passed a cloth vendor and stopped. A patterned skirt caught her eye. Royal blue with silver embroidery, intricate and elegant. Her breath hitched. She reached out and touched the cloth. Another flash.

“Trolls! Welcome our latest victims—did I say victims? I meant members!” Laughter erupted from the crowd. Raven raised a hand and the laughter dissolved. “I need a volunteer to wrestle them,” she continued. “Let’s see how fast their bones snap!” A troll stepped forward. He was massive—twice my height, thick with muscle, his skin the color of wet clay. “I’ll break them in two!” he bellowed, slamming a keg to the ground. The crowd cheered louder. I stepped forward. They laughed harder. “She’s serious?” one jeered.

The dining table looked like it had lost a fight with a very determined elf. Wrapping paper was everywhere. Metallic gold crumpled in one corner, rolls of deep navy and cream ribbon unspooled across the floor, and a half-used roll of double-sided tape stuck to my forearm like some festive battle wound. A glittery bow clung to my sock, and I was ninety percent sure I had a tiny pair of scissors buried somewhere under the tissue paper avalanche.

“Do we have any kind of table cloth, to keep from scratching the wood?” Susan took a heartbeat to open the wooden cabinet by the closet and hand me two tablecloths, one made of thick cotton and one made of rubber. “Thanks. Give us ten minutes to clear the kitchen.” “Of course.” “Get started. I’ll be right back,” I said to Brandon, and headed to the library.

Each one was encrusted with rare stones and embroidered with the sigils of ancient packs. My eyes drifted to a glass cabinet at the far end of the hall. "Are those for sale?" They were Trolls. “Apologies if we scared you, my king.” One of them said. “They were really not lying when they said you guys look ugly,” Ambrosia said making Luka laugh, and the Trolls glare at him. He was still angry about being run over by one of them.

Troll Camp The dark shadows of the night were not demons; they were men. But they were not completely the same type of men that Robah, the river troll, and all their species produced. They appeared more apelike. However, they seemed to walk straight but were hairier than normal, with a stocky, vigorous musculature and pronounced brows and jaws. They wore animal skins and wreaths assembled from the competition they hunted, thus forging the misconception of magical inhabitants in the night.
