He didn’t ask to read it. “Did the truth scare you?” he asked. “It began somewhere I did not expect,” I said, not telling him the full line yet. “Then it is probably honest,” he said. He set his pen down and turned toward me, telling me he didn’t want vows that put us both to sleep inside beautiful words. He wanted vows that kept us awake to the truth. “Do not write the vow you think a bride should say,” he said. “Write the one only you can say.”
