“Where is she?” The voices stopped. The silence was worse than the song. Then, from the far end of the tunnel, a shape emerged. It wasn’t a reaper, or a soul, or anything that had ever lived. Its form was fluid, like liquid metal taking a thousand shapes at once — wings, hands, eyes, faces — all flickering through existence and dissolving again.
