I used their momentum against them, stepping sideways at the last second, letting them overcommit, whacking wings when they got too close.
Where I absolutely had to, I nudged.
A half‑second stall in a wingbeat.
A stutter in a swoop.
Small edits.
Enough to send them into one another or into the hungry maws of the hulks below.
“SYNERGY: HIGH,” flashed briefly above us when one beast, thrown off by a seesaw shift, plowed into another and both went over the edge together, disappearing into the shimmering boundary with a spectacular crash.
My lungs burned. Sweat slicked my back under my shirt. The ache behind my eyes flared and faded each time I leaned on the pen—but so far, the cost stayed in th
