Aaron would see it, the whole school would see it, and she’d be finished. He was supposed to be mine anyways — his money, his status, his attention. Not hers. Never hers. A slow, satisfied smile spread across my lips. The girls who followed me were useful for spreading this later.

Paige looked up at me like I was a genius, and I tucked the memory of the light in her eyes away to take out the next time I was upset. “Oh!” Lauren put a hand to her chest. “That’s very generous…and might actually be clinically useful.” She bit a pen she held in her hand. “Yeah, I think that might work, once I’m actually transitioned over.” She looked at Paige. “We’ll talk details soon. Maybe as soon as you’ve closed?” Paige nodded, and Lauren said goodbye then disappeared back into her office. I led my girl out of the building, Paige practically skipping the whole way. I couldn’t keep the grin off my face.

Ruby's decision to give up the position so easily left Paige dumbfounded. Ruby seized the opportunity to make her exit, intending to inform the Head of Department as soon as possible. However, before she could leave, Paige stopped her again, adding a condition. "Wait! You can have the privilege for the next two weeks since I'll be away. But after that, it's mine," Paige declared, offering a fake smile before confidently walking out of the bathroom, the sound of her sandals echoing on the tiled floor.

For Paige, everything seemed to be happening so fast. Just this morning, she was being called a thief and kicked out of her house. And now, she was going to be performing on a show tonight. She pinched herself to be sure she wasn't dreaming, and Jessica, who was staring at her, smiled, "Come on, let's go change your wardrobe." I turned and saw Lucille looking up at the building with the baby in her arms. Patrick's office was on the ninth floor. My guess was that she knew exactly which window looked into Patrick's office. It was action time. I pulled Shania along and walked out of the cafe. Though everything was going according to plan and I wished for them to be utterly ruined with all my heart, I couldn't keep the anxiousness at bay. I felt so jittery that I stumbled. Today was the day I turned eighteen and everybody was busy planning my dinner party this evening so no one noticed my absence. We sneaked back into my room and quickly changed our clothes before anyone saw us. "I'm never helping you sneak out again!" Paige declared and shot me an annoyed look while trying to tie her hair in a bun. It was how maids were to dress their hair. Paige was an omega. She lost her parents in a rogue attack when she was eight and was brought into the castle where she served as my companion. It was only two years ago that my father made her my personal maid as well.

“Come inside. I have cookies for Lila.” I clutch Lila closer and step into Paige’s living room. The place smells like sage and chai tea. Crystals clutter the shelves. Plants spill out of every corner, green and wild. We settle in her backyard, under the faded pergola. Paige sets her deck of cards between us, no preamble, no explanation. She doesn’t ask permission. She never does. “Okay,” she says. “I didn’t want to push, but I pulled a spread on you this morning and you need to hear it.”
