“Letting us stay here. Making food. I don’t know how I’m going to—” My phone lit up on the kitchen island, vibrating insistently. Jack’s name flashed across the screen. Paige’s expression shuttered instantly. Her whole body tensed, and I watched her retreat into that shell she had built around herself. I didn’t answer. Just let it ring until it went to voicemail. “Paige,” I said, swallowing the lump in my throat and turning to face her fully. I met her eyes, which looked fragile, and knew exactly what I had to do to tear her away from him forever.

She had been expecting either Grandma or even the make-up artist who left earlier to check if Rain had arrived as per her request but it wasn't any of those two, it was Cedric looking he just walked out of a mafia runway magazine. Paige felt her breath hitch in her throat as she allowed her gaze to fall on him, checking him out of hair to toe. Make her look presentable before we gift-wrap her for this fine gentleman.” Two of the men disappeared into the corridor. A few minutes later, they reappeared—carrying her. Paige. Her body was limp, her head resting against one of the men’s shoulders. Blood stained her cheek. Her lips were cracked. Bruises colored her arms and legs like paint from a tragic masterpiece. She looked so fragile. So human.

I felt like I was going to disappear into that tree in a moment. I pursed my lips, controlled my breath. He might be a ghost. Or might not. "Paige, Paige Kam." My bet's on me!" Paige was a master of deception, always playing the part of the pure, gentle saint in front of Dominic. When he saw the footage of her snarling and trying to kill me, he froze. For a moment, I thought he might finally apologize—maybe show some guilt, some regret. Instead, after a pause, he said, "Paige made a mistake, but she's injured. She's not well enough to go to jail." The door was ajar, and Talia could hear Paige talking on the phone. "Mr. Pratt? Hello, I was wondering if you could do me a favor. "Yes, this is Paige, the model. "Okay, well, I won't keep you." A few moments later, Paige dialed another number. "Hello, Mr. Aguilar, it's Paige Webb. I was hoping you could help me with something. "Oh, Mr. Aguilar's busy? Well, never mind, then. "Hello, is this Mr. Hardin? Yes, it's Paige."

I push through the crowd and onto the stairs. “Everyone, Paige comes from a small pack, and this is overwhelming to her. I’m not sure if it’s because she’s hugging me tighter or trying to hurt me for admitting she’s overwhelmed. Either way, it’s adorable. “I’m not a trophy. You can’t show me off,” Paige whispers with a fake smile. Instead of her intended anger, only fear seeps through her words.

After an earthquake, my sister, Lila York, and I joined a search and rescue team. In my past life, she dug through the debris half-heartedly, looking tired and resigned. This time, she was beyond excited. Her facial muscles twitched and twisted with her agitation. To prevent me from stopping her, she shoved me to the ground and threw pieces of debris at my legs.
