The paper left on the page was uneven, an indication that someone had torn a page out. Why would someone do that? I scanned the surrounding pages, trying to make sense of the missing section. It seemed to be a crucial part of the book, detailing werewolf lore, ancient rituals and witch potions.

Her voice cracked, no longer confident. “Do you even know what that will cost?” Elthara’s fingers closed over the edge of the page, and her voice was clear. “Everything. But some endings are worth the cost.” The golden thread pulsed once more, not as a weapon, but as a key. The page began to fold inward, wrapping light around itself.

I signed. I placed the papers down on the desk after signing, staring at them as if I wanted to pick them up and shred them into pieces. I quickly got up from my seat and opened the door. He turned his head toward me. That slight smirk was still plastered on his face. Such a beautiful face should not belong to a man with so much arrogance, I said to myself. He looked at me like he already knew what my decision was. He stepped in and came close, staring deeply at me before saying, “Finally made your decision.”

Their worried faces flashed before me, asking what was wrong. I swallowed the taste of blood and managed a weak smile. "It's nothing. I just had a dream where a princess-like girl was celebrating her birthday. Her brothers brought in a whole orchestra to play for her. She had the tallest cake, and a dress prettier than any I've ever seen. They even gave her the black card just like that. "The New Year's celebration was just a distant echo for me, alone in my rented room, surrounded by a sea of discarded items. "
