Uglies Westerfeld Novels & Stories

But instead of old stories from my grandmother’s life, the pages were scrawled with strange symbols and sketches—shorthand in her handwriting explaining the purpose of different runes and sigils. Flipping through the pages, there were sketches of wolves, and the last page that she’d written in had a detailed rendition of a nightmarish wolf-beast that made my blood run cold at the sight of it, it’s eyes smudged over with charcoal in the shape of a protective rune. My heart raced when I realized what I was holding. This was no ordinary journal, it was a spell book.

Aurora snorted coldly, “Your godmother tried to strangle me with a girdling. So you tell me.” “Well about that…” Westin rubbed his nose, “The House of Dark is not very fond of the werewolves. I was hoping that their perception could change one day.” Judging by Elder Medline’s attitude, that day might never come. Aurora frowned for a few seconds and still decided to ask it: “Westin, do I have a thick waist in your eyes?” “…What?” Westin was stunned. “Just answer honestly. Your godmother said that…I have a man’s waist,” Aurora complained.

"I can't make sense of it, but I think we don't need to worry about all that. Let's just focus on making Abyss City even stronger first!" Andrew said, "No matter how fast we grow, we still need time. But right now, whether it's the Cathedral or the Ludendorff family, either side can swallow up Abyss City completely. So time isn't on our side. We'll have to create our own advantages. Mr. Hearst, which major city is to the west in the Outlands?" Franz was startled, then answered, "There's nothing but wasteland to the west. While there's no major city, in the far west lies the Werewolf Sacred Mountain ruled by the Dark Clans."

Kevin replied, "No way! You're the prettiest woman in Dainsclef Village." He tried to lift the blanket to look at me, yet I gripped it tightly. "Please—don't look at me!" Kevin had no choice but to wrap me and the blanket together in his arms. Even when I was living with the poor Larsons, I was well taken care of, with smooth, soft skin. But how could this emaciated woman with hollow eyes staring back at me now possibly be me? "Who said you're ugly? My lovely Cindy is the prettiest woman in the world!"

Her face settled back into its usual sad form. “Eat up. We have to leave soon.” she said, rising to her feet and dusting her hands on her trousers awkwardly, for an invisible dust. I nodded, tearing hastily into the chicken. As I ate, a thought crept my mind—maybe Hazel wasn’t as mean as I’d assumed. For a few minutes there, I saw the warmth in her. **** The sun was barely out when Hazel and I approached a big mansion that looked like royalty. The compound spread endlessly, with towering walls and ornate iron gates. A sign rested above the gate, written boldly: The Blackwell Mansion. I felt strange ripples all over.

I whined, picking up a sweatshirt with fragility. "Well... because you didn't listen to the warnings and so you brought this upon yourself. Good luck and try to stay alive." Alpha Gray laughed, closing the door to my escape and the door of the big laundry room. Werewolves sweat and blood smell awful than humans because of the supernatural power they hold. But I will surely be dying over this foul smell. "Oh! Look. It's Clara the troublemaker." The beta entered the room, pushing a big trolley filled with another pile of dirty clothes.

Then it devolved into pure, unadulterated chaos. The interior was a cathedral of decay. Rusted machinery cast long shadows in the light filtering through broken roof panels. The monsters were… wrong. They looked like boars, but their skin was scaled and glistening, their tusks dripping with a saliva that smoked where it hit the concrete. Their eyes were milky white, blind but somehow tracking us. Bryan was in his element, launching fireballs and laughing maniacally as he kited three of them around a giant, dead loom. “C’MON, UGLIES! RIGHT HERE!”

Just two people walking in the same direction while I hunted for answers. The market smelled like everything at once: sun-warmed leather, burning sage, iron from freshly sharpened blades, and the faint sweet rot of overripe moonberries. Wolves of every rank moved past us—northern rogues with frost-bitten scars, southern merchants in silk-trimmed cloaks, border wolves who smelled faintly of gun oil and desperation. Voices overlapped in a dozen dialects: haggling over venom antidotes, trading rumors about rogue movements near the eastern wall, bartering moon-blessed pelts for vials of something that shimmered like liquid starlight. No one paid us much attention. I looked like hired help; Kaele

"That bitch Vex emptied her entire perimeter for this!" He wasn't lying. Through the blown gate, Vex’s horde poured in like an absolute tide of meat and metal. There were scarred, rabid wolves the size of small trucks, roaring rogue humans armed with makeshift shotguns, and cutting through the center were things that made my blood turn to pure ice. Hybrids. Massive, pale-skinned monsters with elongated limbs and hollow gold eyes—the exact same genetic footprint as Ezra, but twisted, scarred, and wearing Thorne’s laboratory branding on their necks. Vex had stolen his data. She had stolen his stock.
