Regret crashed over me like relentless waves. As the years rolled on, it felt like relentless waves were pummeling me, each threatening to drown me. However, no other girl came to my rescue. I must have crawled to the kitchen for water and I collasped in front of the refrigerator door.” “Stop, this sounds awful.” Her auntie said.

The sun over Lagos burned without mercy, turning every metal roof into a sheet of fire. At the bus stop, the air quivered with exhaust fumes, impatient honks, and voices raised in the daily battle of survival. Promise stood apart from the crowd, clutching her bag tightly against her body. Her red heels pressed into the cracked pavement, the straps biting her ankles, but her chin stayed level. The words she had written the night before pulsed through her veins: Broken shoes, unbroken steps.

The side mirror shattered. Diane's eyes narrowed. She slammed her foot on the accelerator. I clenched my jaw and summoned every ounce of strength in my body. My wrists rubbed raw and bloody against the restraints. Finally, I managed to break the window with my elbow and scrambled out frantically. Thankfully, I'd taken swimming lessons for a month overseas. Otherwise, I would've drowned. The moment the window shattered, seawater flooded the entire car. It sank rapidly. When the rescue team recovered the car, Diane was already dead.
