It took a while before everyone's eyes got used to the dark. Maddie sat on the floor with her head bowed and she didn't move. Omem provided the light for the lanterns brought along, and to everyone's dismay, the beautiful oak had no leaves anymore. Not much was left of the oak except old wood, all its life energy had gone to Maddie. She touched the tree.

I leaned against an old oak some distance from the ridge, hands in my pockets, head tilted back to watch the moon carve silver through the branches.
