My back was against the cold marble, my neck twisted at an angle that would hurt later, and the whiskey bottle was empty on its side beside me, a dark stain spreading across the stone where the last of it had spilled.
I didn't remember falling asleep.
I didn't remember much of anything after the second bottle.
I sat up slowly, my head pounding, my mouth dry, my stomach lurching with the kind of nausea that only came from drinking too much and eating too little. The morning light was cruel through the bare windows, exposing every crack in the walls, every stain on the floors, every inch of the wreckage I had become.
I looked at my hands.
They were shaking.
