A look of distaste drawn across her face. "Kourt, come on. You're wasting your time," she said irritatedly, rolling her eyes. Yes, she was probably wasting her time. She ignored her remark and scrutinized me instead as if I was a test she needed to solve. "It might seem sudden but hey," she smiled, extending her hand for a handshake. The students began to babble louder and some were even enthusiastic to see my reaction, "Kourtney Devaraux, captain of the cheerleading team."

Nightmare: Dread pitted in her stomach as they made their way up the walkway to the school. Entering through the gym her stomach knotted. She saw the hard stares of the cheerleaders. As she walked by they leaned in and whispered to each other. She used to be one of them. She was even going to college on a scholarship from cheerleading. She would go to practice every Monday, Wednesday and Friday with them. Laura and her would be in constant contact about new routines. She was one of the lead cheerleaders, they looked up to her. Cheerleading had been her life. She thought the squad were her friends but when her world crashed and burned they were the first to let her fall and drift away.

I said and she rolled her eyes at me "It's the dance you auditioned with." She told me before we stopped in front of the rest of the cheer squad. They handed me, my poms, before hugging me. "Now give it up for the cheer squad!" Griff yelled over the mic and everyone cheered us on. Lord have mercy. "Nice legs!" Some guy in the crowd yelled at us. Like ew bitch shut the fuck up. Paige grabbed the mic from Griff before smiling. "Whoever the fuck just said that ew. This year the only guys in our league are on the football team." She explained and the boys tapped Griff's back.

I smile, “Yeah, like fairies and werewolves.” “I love that I’m considered a myth. Makes me feel special.” “Hey, guys,” Zane walks up, holding Luna’s hand. “Hey, Quinn, what do you think about joining the cheer squad?” Luna asks. “We are a girl short. And, I mean, it would be nice to be friends, since our boyfriends are friends.” Quinn looks at me. “Perfect’s old school didn’t have sports, so she is unsure what you mean,” I explain. “Perfect, she is talking about the girls who cheer us on during the games.”

Her name tag read; Mia Carter. Rank 2 Strength: 6/10 The class erupted into laughter again and I felt my cheek hurt and I glanced at the teacher, expecting her to intervene but she said nothing as another girl joined in. She was seated beside Mia in the same cheerleading uniform. She had short wavy pink hair. I looked down at her name tag and she eyed me carefully. Tasha Greene. Rank 2. Strength: 5/10 They both looked flawless in perfect makeup, and legs crossed and straight posture like they were in a magazine shoot.

Apparently, there was only 5 spots. "Jennifer Sampson." "Katie Richards." "Alison Paul." "Michelle Anderson." "Evelyn Parker." "I'm in." She squealed and hugged me. "Congratulations!" "Cheer practice starts at 3:30 pm tomorrow. Don't be late or you'll be off the team. Oh, and Evelyn, nice routine." Sadie, the cheer captain smiled and strode off. Evelyn was surprised. Sadie rarely ever complimented people. You could say she was super blunt which often came across as mean.

I follow her and when we finally get to the other cheerleaders, they are seated on the grass. "Thanks, girl," Cora whispers and squeezes my arm. I wink and she gets the girls to stand. I don't have a uniform so I'll sit tonight out, but I need to help with the routine. We have our work cut out for us. "Girls, we're going to kick ass tonight!" Cora yells and the girls cheer. Hopefully, Kate's muscle memory will kick in. I have no experience in cheerleading and this could go horribly wrong. I can only trust that the author will come through for me.

He joined the team in the center of the gymnasium floor as the entire school and staff paid homage to their beloved team. It was time for the cheerleaders to do a few cheers as well as a tumbling routine. I was amazed at how athletic and how coordinated they all were. Vanessa really had skills when it came to putting a high quality squad together. Courtney had told me that they felt they really had a good shot at State this year, too. Seeing them in action, I could understand why and the hype behind the competitions they would be entering.

I had known since the welfare review that she was carrying something she had not shown anyone. She had been here the entire time, performing three times a week at minimum according to what Nikki had just told us. She was a cheerleading captain who led the Crestwood Wolves squad at every game, who stood in the athletics complex in her uniform with her team around her and her boyfriend beside her, then went home at the end of the day, changed her name, became someone else, and came to this building where no one knew the first version existed.

Several whistles blow around the field as students bide for coveted spots. I get low on the ground to take a few pictures of Juliet and a few of the girls in the cheer squad mid-jump. The girls look great in their black and silver cheer uniforms. Their uniforms are traditional with sleeveless black cutoff tops that show their bellies and short black pleated skirts. Juliet gives me a thumbs-up as she twirls around to continue her routine.
