Someone nearby, maybe, from the copy editing section, let out a poorly disguised cough that sounded exactly like a laugh.
Vanessa's face flushed slightly. Her composure, usually so carefully maintained, was showing cracks.
"I'm just saying," she tried again, "don't let the assignment go to your head. There are plenty of writers in this building who could do what you're doing."
"Probably," I agreed. "But Daniel didn't pick them. He picked me. So here I am, doing it."
I gestured vaguely at the notes spread across my desk, the transcripts, the highlighted quotes, the sticky notes with cross-references to old game footage and archived interviews.
