Her nerves were raw from Daniel's situation, from the threats, from everything spiraling out of control.
Vanessa swept in fifteen minutes late, looking magazine-perfect. Blonde hair styled in loose waves, designer dress that probably cost more than Maya's monthly rent, expensive perfume announcing her arrival three steps before she reached the table.
"Oh my God, Maya!" Vanessa's hug was suffocating. "You look... tired. Are you okay?"
First strike. Vanessa always opened with compliments wrapped around insults.
"Grad school is brutal," Maya said lightly.
"I could never." Vanessa laughed, sliding into her seat. "But seriously, are you taking care of yourself? People are worried about you."
