Their feathers rippled as they deflected the surge—droplets splattered against the maze’s towering hedge walls. The laughter died on the mayor’s lips when one of the birds slashed at her. Its talons tore through her blouse and left shallow crimson trails across her pale skin. She hissed, teleporting in a blur and reappearing behind the other owl, seizing it mid-flight. A sharp screech split the air as she sank her teeth into its flank. The sound was visceral, wet—the sickening noise of blood being drained. The remaining bird, its mate, shrieked, the cry sending a wave of mirrored agony through Arah’s chest.

They left only a few scratches on Victor's mech. The bird-man monster didn't expect Victor to be so tough. He fell from the sky in shock. It wasn't that he didn't want to keep flying, but the previous move had used up all the feathers on his wings, so he couldn't fly anymore. By the time he hit the ground, Victor had already covered the hundred-meter distance and reached his position. Victor gave the bird-man no chance to do anything else. He raised the sword and swung it at the bird-man's crotch.

The tyrant was dead. A silence fell over the clearing, heavy and final. Then, Victor threw his head back and howled—a sound of pure victory that echoed off the mountains. I joined him, and then the rest of the pack, until the night was filled with the song of Blackthorn. We watched the compound burn until dawn. Victor pulled me against his side, his arm wrapped tight around my waist, his nose buried in my hair. He smelled of blood and smoke and home. "It's done," he murmured, his voice rough. Ava must have succeeded in communicating with Chakor, as he banks right, away from the edge of the enemy, adjusting his flight path to line up with the east division. A prey bird anticipates his move, sweeping out and plowing into his side at the right moment. Chakor and Ava downward spiral from the sky, the prey bird pushing them along. Hunji roars, “Chakor!” Ruda’s painful howl mixed with a growl as we all saw the other two prey birds attack from underneath, their sharp beaks and jagged teeth tearing into his wings. Ava, hanging on for dear life is plucked from Chakor’s back, bitten in half. The bird swallows the top half of her body, as her legs, along with Chakor plummet to the ground.

A tear dropped and Iris wiped it as she sniffled. "M-miss, I h-honestly didn't try to kill y-you." She hiccupped and I felt a strong feeling of dija-vu go through me. I have experienced this scene before. I ignored Iris for awhile and looked around in curiosity, trying to place my fingers on it but then; "Alpha Lily, are you alright?" A bunch of guards appeared out of nowhere and ran towards me in a straight file. They surrounded me and Iris. "Grab her." One of them pointed to Iris and all colors drained out of her face as she was lifted off the ground roughly.

I'm snapped from my spiral when he reaches for the hem of my damp hoodie again, slower this time, giving me every chance to stop him. I don’t. His irises disappear as pupils blow. “Arms up.” The command sends another humiliating pulse of heat through me. Still, I obey.
