Viking Historical Fiction Novels & Stories

If you're hunting for saga-style heroics in Viking fiction, you've got to look at the narrative voice. A lot of modern books get the axes and ships right but miss the fatalistic, almost mythic tone of the actual sagas.

For pure saga spirit, I keep returning to 'The Long Ships' by Frans G. Bengtsson. It’s older, translated from Swedish, and has that episodic, rolling adventure feel. Red Orm’s travels—from being captured by Moors to serving a Danish king—feel ripped from a lost tale. The heroics aren’t about being a flawless superman; they’re about cleverness, luck, and surviving the whims of fate and kings. The prose has a dry, wry humor that somehow makes the battles and raids feel more authentic.

More recently, Giles Kristian’s 'Raven' series nails it. It’s written from the perspective of a young Norseman, Osric, who becomes a warrior named Raven. The action is brutal and direct, but what makes it saga-like is the deep focus on kinship, oath-making, and the relentless pursuit of vengeance and honor. The characters feel like they stepped out of a skald’s song, driven by those larger-than-life motivations that define the old stories. The series doesn’t shy from the darkness but wraps it in a compelling, propulsive adventure.

A niche recommendation: 'The Lost Queen' by Signe Pike is technically about pre-Viking Scotland and the roots of Arthurian legend, but it deals with the clash between Celtic paganism and incoming Christianity—the same cultural shift that defined the later Viking Age. The atmosphere and the threat of invading 'sea wolves' feel very similar. If you're interested in the spiritual and cultural landscape that the Vikings both disrupted and were eventually absorbed by, it's a fascinating prequel of sorts. It’s more mystical but grounded in good historical research of post-Roman Britain.

What about from a female perspective? Most Viking historicals are from a warrior’s POV. A seeress (völva) or a housekeeper managing a farmstead’s rituals would have a completely different, intimate relationship with the gods and spirits. 'The Witch's Heart' is one. 'The Sea of Trolls' has a strong female shaman character. 'The Lost Queen' series, while Celtic-focused, is great for this. I’d love more novels centered on the women who maintained the domestic cults and interpreted the will of the gods through more subtle means than battle omens.
