The gods like Mahal (a clear stand-in for a smith god) and the sense of fate, craftsmanship, and deep, mountain-rooted history are all quintessentially Norse in inspiration.

It's a multi-book epic fantasy with a huge cast, but at its core, it's about a dwarf culture facing existential threats. You get millennia-old grudges, rune magic, and a worldview where honor and tradition are as solid as stone. It's a deep dive into one specific archetype from the mythos, expanded into a whole civilization.

Most lists will point you to the same big names, and for a reason. Bernard Cornwell's 'The Last Kingdom' series is foundational. He builds the world from the ground up, with shield walls that feel tangible and a portrayal of Saxon-Viking conflict that doesn't shy from its complexity. For something rooted more directly in the Icelandic sagas, 'The Long Ships' by Frans G. Bengtsson is a masterpiece of adventure. It follows Orm Tostesson across the Viking world, and the humor and episodic nature feel authentically drawn from the source material. It’s less about modern narrative drive and more about capturing the spirit of the sagas themselves—fatalistic, dryly witty, and expansive. Reading it, you get a sense of the Viking worldview that goes beyond dates and battles.

If you want deep, almost anthropological lore, look to Linnea Hartsuyker's 'The Half-Drowned King'. She delves into Norse law, kinship obligations, and the political machinations of petty kingdoms in a way that makes the society feel fully operational. The supernatural elements are subtle and treated as a real part of the characters' belief system, which I think is a key marker of authentic historical fiction. It avoids the trap of making everyone either a brute or a noble savage; they’re people operating within a very specific and well-drawn cultural framework.

I'm gonna go against the grain and suggest something a bit different: 'The Wolf in the Whale' by Jordanna Max Brodsky. It's a fantasy-historical blend about an Inuit shaman and a Viking explorer colliding.

The Viking longship voyage here is a journey into a mystical, frozen hellscape. The sea battles are as much against the elements and mythical creatures as against other humans. It's a unique take if you want sea-faring that feels mythic and terrifyingly vast.
