He just believed people with brains wouldn't come into his chambers with an invitation. She pushed it all the way, making it creak and groan loudly. At first, when she looked into the room, she could see nothing because of how dark it was, but the smell of dust and decaying paper was recognized. But as her eyes adjusted, she saw that there was a lantern that hung by the side of the door. The flame kept shaking because of how low it was. She picked it up, increased it, and looked around the room. It was like a library but with few shelves and books. She brought the lantern close to one of the shelves and she saw a book that caught her eye, “Your First 100 Years as a Vampire,”

In the far corner is a sink and a crude-looking toilet. Hooks line one of the walls, all empty. The air smells like rust and dust. But then, something catches my eye. A shelf near the back, almost hidden in shadow. Not plastic packages this time. Books. Old ones. Their spines are worn, leather cracked. Some have gold filigree. Others are thick and bound in cloth. I move closer, squinting to read the faded titles. “Lineage of Power.” “The Lost Coronation.” “Treaties of the First Blood.”

My fingers traced the spines of leather-bound books, all of them layered in dust that made my nose itch. "Focus," I muttered to myself. "One monster at a time." I immediately admonished myself. I continued to look until I found the books my dad had recommended. I pulled the four heavy volumes from the shelves. The History of Shadow Entities, The Blood Rites of the Unseen, The Search for Shadows and one volume of Pack Lore and Ancient Threats. I carried them to a secluded corner of the library. The dust felt suffocating, but I wouldn't let anything stop me.

He might kick me out and I would just die. “This is amazing,” I managed to whisper, still breathless at the sight. “You like it?” “Like it?” My amazement hung in my voice, and I spun on my heels to face Dante, who was leaning at the door. “Are you kidding me? The old university library smelled of aged paper and secrets. It was past eleven when I slipped between the tall shelves in the restricted section, heart racing. No one was supposed to be here this late, but I couldn’t resist. My fingers trembled as I pulled out a worn leather book titled Forbidden Desires of the Victorian Age. The pages held explicit stories that made my cheeks burn and my body ache.

He hated this kind of situation because she seemed to be entangled in everything and there wasn't a damn thing he could do about it. Several hours later, they were still searching the Archive, there were more books,more records and even more questions they didn't have an answer to. Zara sat at one of the tables flipping through another ancient text, her eyes hurt and her head. She was beginning to suspect old books were secretly weapons.
